Conceptual Art

Sentences on Conceptual Art

"The artist may not necessarily understand his own art. His perception is neither better nor worse than that of others."
This sentence confuses me a little because if the artist does not understand his own art, how can someone else begin to fathom what the artist is trying to say? Yes, people will interpret art in different ways but how can an artist produce great work without having meaning behind it. Is this what separates good art from outstanding ones?

"Successful art changes our understanding of the conventions by altering our perceptions."
I agree with this sentence because the type of art that stands out the most are the ones that make you feel a certain way. I love art that leaves an impression on the viewer. I think it is a very powerful way of speaking to an audience. Art can be anything that makes you feel and see something differently than you previously did.

"The artist cannot imagine his art, and cannot perceive it until it is complete."
To some degree, I don't agree with this statement because I believe we set goals for ourselves in some form. Although the artist may not know what the final product will look like, he/she knows the direction in which he needs to start. It might be the sense of style that is unique to the artist that creates the first step to his/her piece. By knowing the direction, the first step is going to determine the rest of the art piece.
