Susan Sontag

“To collect photographs is to collect the world,” one of the largest statements Sara Sontag makes in On Photography. She explains that photographs are nothing more than cheap day-to-day objects but have the strong ability to express emotion. Unique to any other object, an image provides “the look of the past and the reach of the present.” Photographs guarantee longevity and sometimes even immortality. It is inevitable for humans to find ways to preserve themselves and others. Images create a realistic element at a moment in time. I find it intriguing that photography has evolved over the years making some things less realistic and more imaginative. Today, we have the tools to erase, add and distort images as we see fit. Although technology has changed large aspects of photography it still remains a way of evoking feelings through a minimal source.
